ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The University of Michigan's football program is under investigation for allegedly stealing signs, according to the Big Ten Conference.
The Big Ten and the university were both notified by the NCAA of the investigation on Wednesday. The conference added that it has also notified the Wolverines' future opponents.
Yahoo Sports reported that Michigan "used unnamed individuals to attend games of both scheduled opponents and possible College Football Playoff opponents in an effort to gather information on the signs they use to call both offensive and defensive plays."
If the allegations are true, Michigan would be in violation of NCAA Bylaw 11.6.1, which states "Off-campus, in-person scouring of future opponents (in the same season) is prohibited." The bylaws did not detail what the punishment would be if a program is found guilty.
The No. 2 ranked Wolverines play Michigan State this weekend.
Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh already served a three-game suspension imposed by the university earlier this year for alleged recruiting violations during the COVID-19 pandemic dead period for contact with potential recruits.
Ohio State is scheduled to play Michigan Nov. 25.
