WASHINGTON — Snack wrap fans, McDonald's has heard you loud and clear.
The fast food giant announced Thursday it is bringing back the fan-favorite menu item after discontinuing it in the U.S. a few years ago.
"The snack wrap will be back in 2025," McDonald's USA president Joe Erlinger revealed during an interview on Good Morning America. "This has a cult following, I get so many emails into my inbox about this product."
The McDonald's snack wrap debuted in 2006 and led other chains, including Wendy's and KFC to start selling similar snack-like chicken wraps. The McDonald's option was phased out completely from U.S. locations in 2020. Since then, there have been online petitions and various social media rumors about the menu item's possible return.
In a social media post, McDonald's senior marketing director Guillaume Huin explained that X, formerly known as Twitter, had a "gigantic impact" on the return of snack wraps and it's been by far their most requested items of all time.
"The people won, and there's no better gift for a company than the one to just make people happy. Tears of joy, my friend," Huin posted.
When is McDonald's bringing back snack wraps?
Erlinger wouldn't say exactly when next year snack wraps will return to the menu, citing "competitive reasons." The chain's snack wraps have remained available in other countries, including Canada and the United Kingdom.
While snack wraps have been off the menu at McDonald's in the U.S., other competitors have looked to draw in customers. Fresh off the "chicken sandwich wars," last year both Wendy's and KFC added or announced plans with a few weeks of each other to add chicken wraps to their menus nationwide.
McDonald's is in the midst of a big push to win back customer trust after an outbreak of E. coli food poisoning tied to onions on its Quarter Pounder hamburgers.
During Thursday's interview, Erlinger apologized to customers for letting them down and said they have work to do while trying to rebuild everyone's trust.
"Food safety at McDonald's is actually everybody's business," Erlinger said. "We make it our priority in our headquarters, it's a priority in our nearly 13,500 restaurants, it's a priority across our supplier facilities. And so, the work is not done, like I said, and we will focus on food safety."
The company is actually launching a new McValue menu that'll be available nationwide starting Jan. 7, featuring more ways to save and the extension of its $5 meal deals.
