WASHINGTON — NBC News' Kristen Welker and her husband, John Hughes, have announced they are expecting their second child via surrogate in the next few weeks.
Back in 2021, Welker and Hughes revealed the struggles with infertility that they had gone through before the birth of their first daughter, Margot, through a surrogate.
This time around, the couple found out they were expecting another baby shortly after Welker was named the moderator for NBC's "Meet The Press."
"We had tried for over a year to have a second baby, a sibling for Margot, and we'd had setbacks, we'd had more heartbreak and yet we kept pushing forward," Welker said Tuesday during the announcement on "TODAY."
Welker and Hughes said they want to share their story because they want couples dealing with infertility to know they're not alone.
"There are many moments in infertility where it's just you, it's just you and your partner, it's very hard. So I'm very proud," Hughes said.
Welker said as an only child she always wanted to have two kids. She shared that Margot was very excited when they told her and she keeps telling her friends that her parents are getting her a baby brother for her birthday. Margot turns 3 on June 12.
While the couple has a few "top contenders" for a name they're deciding between, Margot already has a nickname for her brother - calling him Lolo.
Back in March, Welker and sportscaster Erin Andrews spoke about their surrogacy journeys and surprised a couple struggling with infertility with a $20,000 grant to help them have a child.
