PELHAM, New Hampshire — Police in New Hampshire say a fawn was found crying next to its deceased mother that was hit and killed by a car.

According to a Facebook post from the Salem Police Department, a Pelham resident had heard a crying noise near his house before he left for work in the morning and again when he got back in the evening.

Checking in the woods behind his house, the resident found the fawn lying next to its deceased mother. Police say further investigation revealed that the mother had been hit by a vehicle on a nearby busy road. The mother was able to make it back to her fawn before succumbing to her injuries.

Police say the fawn’s life was saved by Animal Control Officer Corie Bliss and a four-hour commute to get her rehabilitated.

“Animals never fail to amaze us each and every single day! Thank you to all our wonderful wildlife rehabilitators in our state for all you do,” the department said.
