Mother Of Man Sentenced For Knox County Murders Talks About His Life Behind Bars

The one person that has had the most contact and insight into Matthew Hoffman is his own mother, Pat.
 
She talked to 10TV about what he says now.
 
Matthew John Hoffman, 32, is serving a life sentence for the 2010 Knox County murders and dismemberments of Tina Herrmann, her son Kody Maynard, and family friend Stephanie Sprang.
 
It’s a crime even his own mother could not comprehend.
 
“I had no idea this was even possible,” said Pat Hoffman in a 2011 interview.
 
Most everyone else in his family had now disowned him, according to Pat. But she visits him every six weeks and talks on the phone with him once a week.
 
On the phone on Monday, Pat told 10TV that Matthew has had difficulty in prison. He experiences mild forms of panic attacks.
 
To this day, he has never spoken a word about the murders.
 
Matthew Hoffman has been serving time at the Allen Oakwood Correctional Facility in Lima for the last 11 months.
 
According to prison records, he broke a glass shelf and was charged with disobedience, destroying property, and creating a disturbance in March 2012. He was given seven days in segregation.
 
He also had minor conduct reports for being out of place, a visiting violation and refusing an educational test.
 
Hoffman remains in protective custody, requires close supervision and is considered a Level 3 inmate.
 
Pat Hoffman said she told her son about the Maynard’s book “The Girl In the Leaves” and their appearance on Dr. Phil.
 
She said he did not ask any questions and revealed nothing about the crime.
