Marion City Schools is investigating complaints a teacher had an inappropriate discussion in class.
Group discussions are common in high school English classes.
But the alleged topic of discussion during a class at Marion Harding High School has the superintendent concerned.
"The teacher had some comments about something sexual," said Dr. James Barney
Barney said the discussion centered around sexual activity.
In addition, Barney said the 27-year-old teacher is accused of showing two YouTube videos to the class.
"One of those, I understand was a comedian who had a lot of language that we would find unacceptable and inappropriate,” said Barney. “The second, it was shared with me, was a student making fun of parents kind of a piece, again, with inappropriate language."
Barney said he was also uncomfortable with accusations the teacher offered to change student grades.
“Telling students this is Fun Friday, and if you participate, I will change your grade or you can earn bonus points on your grade," added Barney.
Barney said the district knows, for sure, some grades were changed that day.
He also said they now need to determine if the changes were made by the teacher in question and if they were for students in that particular English class.
The district said it became aware of the allegations after one of the students in the class reported it to the principal. District officials said the student recorded part what happened in the classroom on a cell phone.
The unidentified teacher is on paid leave while the district investigates.
