Man Involved In Denison Student's Death To Be Released From Prison

One of the defendants in the 1982 slaying of a Denison University student will be released from prison in June, 10TV News reported Tuesday.

The state parole board voted Tuesday to release Gordon Newlin after Franklin County prosecutor Ron O'Brien, along with a former prosecutor and a retired police detective, spoke out against Newlin's release.

Newlin, 60, was convicted in connection with the shooting death of Laura Carter, an 18-year-old Denison University student who was shot on April 17, 1982.

Carter's parents were in central Ohio visiting their daughter and took her to dinner in Columbus, where Carter was struck by a stray bullet along East Broad Street near East High School, The Columbus Dispatch reported.

Carter died at St. Anthony Hospital, now University Hospital East.

Police said that the bullet was fired as part of an ongoing drug war between a gang and outsiders from Cleveland.

Newlin was a member of the Columbus gang. His brother and a friend also were convicted in connection with Carter's shooting death. A fourth man was acquitted.
