Tornado sirens were reported going on and off in portions of Franklin County early Thursdaybecause of some malfunctioning signals.
The sirens were activated at about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday after tornado warnings were issued forFranklin County.
The warnings were canceled at about 12:19 a.m. but several of the sirens continued to blare,10TV's Andy Hirsch reported.
The Franklin County Emergency Management Association confirmed the malfunctioning sirens weresounding in several neighborhoods across the county. Jim Williams of the Franklin County EMAsaid that severe lightning strikes disrupted the cycling of the sirens. Repair crews were]dispatched to sirens that were malfunctioning.
"They'rean electric system, operated by radio and that's a nationwide standard,” Williams said. “If youhave an electric storm and you loose electrical power, the siren system is vulnerable."
10TVNews learned that all 150 sirens in the county were checked on Thursday to ensure that theyare working correctly, Hirsch reported.
Last year, several sirens malfunctioned and would not sound when later warnings wereactivated.
