400 without power after fire breaks out at Westerville electric substation

City workers are asking drivers to treat traffic lights in the area as four-way stops.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Crews in Westerville are working to restore power to hundreds of residents after a fire broke out at an electric substation.

The Westerville Division of Police said the McCorkle substation exploded overnight, causing a chain reaction of transformers bowing out.

As of 7:05 a.m., about 400 homes may have been without power.

City workers are asking drivers to treat traffic lights in the area as four-way stops. There are three intersections that will be without traffic lights for an extended period of time:

  • Maxtown Road Trail and McCorkle Road
  • Maxtown Road Trail and Hilmar Drive
  • Maxtown Road Trail and Spring Road

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
