Police officer injured in wrong-way crash on US Route 40 in Madison County

The officer was released from the hospital. The condition of the other driver is not known at this time.

WEST JEFFERSON, Ohio — A police officer was injured when his vehicle was struck by a wrong-way driver in Madison County late Sunday night.

The crash happened around 11 p.m. on U.S. Route 40 near Inwood Road in West Jefferson, according to the West Jefferson Police Department.

Police said the officer was driving his cruiser west on U.S. 40 when another driver was heading east on the road in the westbound lanes and struck the cruiser.

Police said the officer was taken to Grant Medical Center to be treated for injuries that were not life-threatening. He was released from the hospital a few hours later and is “in good spirits to recovery,” according to a Facebook post from West Jefferson police.

The driver and passenger from the other vehicle, who authorities say described as two females, were taken to a hospital in serious condition, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. 

Investigators do not suspect alcohol or drugs as factors in this crash, which remains under investigation.
