Shipping tips and tricks from UPS and postal service delivery drivers

As Christmas shipping deadlines get closer, delivery drivers share the most common reasons they have trouble dropping packages off.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — As Christmas shipping deadlines approach, UPS and postal service workers are sharing the most common reasons packages don't make it to their destination.

One of the top problems delivery drivers have is finding homes where the address sign isn't properly lit or a house where there are a lot of trees in the front yard.

"If you have an apartment we need an apartment number. If you have a unit, we need a unit number. If you have a suite, we need a suite number," said Luann Canini, a USPS letter carrier. "A lot of people have their address on rocks or different trees or things of that nature. It does help if they can light the path for us" she added.

UPS driver Darryl Pace added any extra instructions people can give drivers is always helpful.

Those distinctions can be made through the UPS app under the "delivery options" section, and through the postal service by creating an account.

"Any driver instructions, front door or back door, off the road, look for this box here. They can always use anything that they can to make instructions for our drivers" said Pace

Last but not least, when it comes to packaging your items, use proper tape and write legibly. If you're unsure what type of tape is best, it's best to visit a UPS, post office or FedEx store and have workers help you.
