Retired nurse battling Alzheimer's Disease helps out at Dublin retirement village

Despite no longer actively working as a nurse, Candyce Walchesky helps the staff with resident observations.

DUBLIN, Ohio — As we round out National Nurses Week, one retired nurse living at Senior Star at Dublin Retirement Village is still making a difference, even while battling Alzheimer's disease.

Candyce Walchesky, 70,  is a retired nurse and despite no longer actively working as a nurse, she helps the staff with resident observations.

Candyce helps transport wheelchair-bound residents to and from activities throughout the senior living community. She also keeps a notebook with observations of fellow residents which is shared with the clinical manager.

"She has a notebook and she'll take notes. If she sees there's a little wrap on someone's arm, she'll write that down. She'll say this resident is having a great day with smiling or communicating that day. And at the end of the day he likes to give reports," said Paula Flora with Dublin Retirement Village.

Flora said this is helpful for them, as sometimes residents feel more comfortable speaking with someone closer to their age.

"It just shows she still has that drive to serve and love like all nurses do," said Flora.
