COLUMBUS, Ohio — Authorities have identified the family of a boy who got on the wrong school bus Tuesday morning.
According to the Columbus Division of Police, the boy, estimated to be between the ages of four and six, got onto a school bus heading to Cassady Alternative Elementary School on Tuesday. School officials couldn't communicate with him and determined he was not a student there.
The boy speaks Haitian Creole and could not provide family information.
Police say the school bus driver was not the typical driver for the route and didn't know the boy wasn't supposed to get on. Authorities are unsure at what point the boy may have got on the bus.
A spokesperson for Columbus City Schools said in a statement that the bus driver asked the student's father, who was at the bus stop with the child, if this was his child's correct bus and the father said yes.
"A language barrier between the father and the driver led to the child being placed on the wrong bus, despite the driver's attempt to verify the child," the spokesperson said.
A spokesperson with Franklin County Children Services said the boy's father contacted the agency. FCCS is working with the family to make sure the boy can safely go home.
