COLUMBUS, Ohio — Two teenagers accused of shooting an Ohio State University wrestler will be evaluated for competency to stand trial.
Casia Mayfield, 15, and Elijah Lee, 16, are accused of shooting OSU wrestler Sammy Sasso during an Aug. 18 carjacking on North High Street near the University District.
Mayfield is charged with two counts of aggravated robbery and one count each of felonious assault, theft, and weapon under disability. Lee, who prosecutors believed pulled the trigger, is charged with two counts of aggravated robbery and one count each of felonious assault and theft.
Mayfield had 11 warrants out for her arrest at the time of the shooting, including receiving stolen property. Lee was released from the Department of Youth Services five days before he allegedly shot Sasso.
The teens appeared in separate hearings in the Franklin County Domestic Relations and Juvenile Court on Thursday. They are represented by different defense attorneys who each filed motions to have them evaluated for competency by a professional.
Judge Monica Hawkins granted their motions, and the teens are scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 15.
The competency evaluations will determine if the teens can understand the court proceedings ahead of them, and if they can assist their defense attorneys during their trials.
Lee's defense attorney Thomas Waldeck told 10TV that the teenager has previously been diagnosed with several mental health illnesses.
"I don't think I had any alternative based on the information I've been given other than to file a written request for that evaluation," Waldeck said. "I think not doing it would have deprived him of effective assistance of council."
Mayfield's attorney declined to comment on the case.
Both Mayfield and Lee are being held in detention.
