COLUMBUS, Ohio — A man is seriously hurt after crashing a vehicle on the city’s southwest side Tuesday morning, according to the Columbus Division of Police.
The crash happened around 10:10 a.m. near the Hilltop neighborhood when a man driving a Honda Accord eastbound on Sullivant Avenue, approaching Ryan Avenue, crossed the median.
The Accord then struck a concrete median island, sending it spinning. The vehicle continued through the median and off the south side of the roadway.
After it left the road, it struck a wall and a utility pole, splitting the car into two.
“I heard a loud bang. I heard my wife screaming, 'oh my gosh,'” said Jason Antis, who lives near where the crash happened.
He described what he saw as horrific. “Your hair stands up when you first see it, you're like 'woah.'”
The reason for driving across the median is still under investigation, police said. Police have not said if the driver was speeding.
“People speed through here all the time. When they come right through here, they don't let off until they get to the top of the hill."
The man was taken to Grant Medical Center in critical condition. Antis said he’s thankful the man is alive.
The crash remains under investigation.
