District: Student shot by unknown man with pellet gun during recess at Columbus elementary school

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A Columbus elementary school student was hit by a plastic pellet after an unknown man fired an airsoft pellet gun during morning recess on Thursday, according to the district.

A spokesperson for Columbus City Schools said that during recess at Burroughs Elementary School, an unidentified man outside the campus pointed the pellet gun toward the playground and discharged it, hitting a student. The school immediately conducted a reverse evacuation and brought students inside the building.

The building remained on a heightened security level for the remainder of the day.

The student was evaluated by the school nurse and is OK.

The unidentified man has not been located. 

The Columbus Division of Police is investigating the incident.
