Police: Man driving stolen motorcycle dies after crashing into minivan at high rate of speed in Hilltop

While it’s unclear how many people were inside the minivan, police said no one in the vehicle was reportedly injured.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — An 18-year-old man who was reportedly driving a stolen motorcycle died after crashing it into a minivan in the Hilltop neighborhood Monday morning, police said.

Officers with the Columbus Division of Police were called to West Broad Street and North Ogden Street just before 2:40 a.m. after receiving a report of a crash in that area.

Investigators learned that the motorcyclist, identified as Joseph Ausmus, was heading east on West Broad Street on a 2011 Yamaha FZ6R at a high rate of speed. It was determined that the motorcycle was reported stolen earlier this month, according to Columbus Police Sgt. Joe Albert.

Meanwhile, a 2007 Honda Odyssey was heading west on the road and was turning into the Mobil gas station near South Ogden Avenue.

Ausmus crashed into the minivan and was ejected. Police said because of the severe impact, he went through the passenger side of the minivan and landed there.

Ausmus was pronounced dead at the scene. While it’s unclear how many people were inside the minivan, police said no one in the vehicle was reportedly injured.

West Broad Street between North Ogden Street and North Warren Avenue was closed while the crash was under investigation.
