Police: Man found shot in car on Route 161 near I-270

The man was taken to Grant Medical Center in critical condition.

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ohio — A man was found shot in a vehicle on state Route 161 near Interstate 270 early Friday morning.

According to the Blendon Township Police Department, officers were called around 2:10 a.m. for a report of a man who was shot on Route 161, west of Sunbury Road.

Arriving officers found a car pulled off to the side of the road and they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound.

Blendon Township Police Chief John Bedford said he believes the man was shot by someone else in a moving vehicle. No other details leading up to the shooting were available.

The ramp from Route 161 to I-270 north and south was closed but has since reopened.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is assisting Blendon Township police in the investigation.

No information about a possible suspect was provided.

News of the shooting was alarming for Delores Gang, who lives nearby and uses Route 161 often.

“It scares me because I live in this area and there is no call for that,” she said. “I believe in having guns but I also believe in doing it responsibly. You don’t shoot people on the highway, you just don’t.”

The investigation is one of several highway shootings this year.

In August, a 911 caller reported being shot on I-270 at West Broad Street.

In October, two people were injured in a shooting on Interstate 70.

“Any time gunshots are going off and bullets are flying around whether it is a highway, residential or commercial area, everyone in the general area is in danger so we want to urge caution and anyone who witnessed anything to please contact us and give us any information they have,” said Belford.

Gang said the incidents have made her nervous to drive in some areas.

“I am nervous to drive on 270 because there were shootings on it I just don’t like it,” she said. “I want to come back alive. I want everyone else to come back alive too. Is that that much to ask?”

Police, as they investigate, have requested video from the Ohio Department of Transportation.
