The new Shotspotter technology being used by Columbus police lead to the arrest of a former Ohio State football player.
Shotspotter is a program that detects gunfire and alerts police. The system notified officers of shots fired over the weekend in the Linden area.
Officers tracked down shell casings and questioned 26-year-old Corey Smith. They discovered the former Buckeye had warrants out of Summit County, including one for aggravated robbery.
Shotspotter has netted seven arrests in two months.
"That’s how we absolutely know that Shotspotter is successful because we will find the remnants of a shot being fired," said Columbus Police Sgt. Chantay Boxill.
Shotspotter is currently in place in Linden and the Hilltop. It will be installed on the south side soon.
