Coroner's office identifies man who was fatally shot by Columbus police officer on city's east side

The Franklin County Coroner's Office said 26-year-old Colin Jennings died from multiple gunshot wounds.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Franklin County Coroner's Office identified the man who was shot by a Columbus police officer on the city's east side last week.

According to the coroner's office, 26-year-old Colin Jennings died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds. He was shot after he reportedly charged at officers with a knife the morning of Feb. 22.

Police received a call for a man with a knife who was cutting himself and fighting the 911 caller at Creekside Place Apartments on North Nelson Road.

Officers arrived at the scene five minutes later and found Jennings. A police spokesperson said he started charging at officers with the knife.

The officers told Jennings to stop, but he continued to charge at them and told police to shoot him, according to the spokesperson.

One officer fired their weapon, striking Jennings at least once. Officers rendered aid until medics took him to Grant Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

No officers were injured in the shooting.

In a statement Monday, Columbus police said two officers were involved in the shooting, but did not specify who fired shots. While police are not identifying the officers involved in the shooting because of Marsy's Law, the officers have been with the department for 13 and 14 years.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is handling the investigation into the shooting.
