Sheriff's office releases new details, identifies deputy involved in deadly courthouse shooting

The Franklin County Sheriff's Office has identified the deputy involved in the deadly shooting of a 16-year-old at the Franklin County courthouse on Wednesday.

The Franklin County Sheriff's Office has identified the deputy involved in the deadly shooting of a 16-year-old at the Franklin County courthouse on Wednesday.

The sheriff's office said Deputy Richard Scarborough was assigned to security on the 5th floor of the Franklin County Juvenile Court when he was called to respond to a disturbance.

Joseph Haynes was in the courtroom on two delinquency cases involving guns.

The sheriff's office said Haynes and his mother became disruptive in the courtroom as the hearing was concluding.

As Haynes and his mother were being escorted from the courtroom, there was an altercation involving Deputy Scarborough, Haynes and his mother outside the courtroom.

Deputy Scarborough was somehow knocked to the ground where he came under attack. The sheriff's office said one shot was fired by the deputy and struck Haynes in the left side of his torso.

Haynes was taken to Grant Medical Center where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

The sheriff's office said Deputy Scarborough was treated and released at a local hospital for facial injuries.
