Student in custody, shelter-in-place lifted at Miami Trace Middle School after airsoft gun confiscated

The sheriff’s office says all students are safe and all buildings on the Miami Trace campus have been cleared.

WASHINGTON COURT HOUSE, Ohio — A Miami Trace Middle School student was taken into custody Tuesday morning after Fayette County Sheriff's deputies found an airsoft gun at the school. 

According to the Fayette County Sheriff's Office, a student reported that another student had a weapon at the school around 9:30 a.m. All students were ordered to shelter in place within their classrooms while more deputies responded. 

The school resource officer detained the 12-year-old suspect and secured his backpack. According to the sheriff's office, the deputy found what appeared to be a firearm inside the bag. 

Upon investigation, deputies learned the weapon was determined to be an airsoft gun, the sheriff's office says.

The sheriff’s office says all students are safe and all buildings on the Miami Trace campus have been cleared. Students will resume their normal schedule. 

The student was taken to South Central Ohio Juvenile Detention Center and charged with counts of illegal conveyance or possession of an object indistinguishable from a firearm in a school safety zone.
