AEP Ohio provides tips on preparing for a winter storm

The electric company has brought in crews from Pennsylvania, Kentucky and Virginia and has 2,100 people ready to restore power.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Winter weather is here and AEP Ohio has provided tips on preparing for extremely cold temperatures and what to do if the power goes out.

As they prepare ahead of storms by calling in crews from other states to assist in possible power outages and damages, they said families should be ready for outages.

One of the best ways to be ready is by making emergency kits, including water, non-perishable foods and blankets.

AEP Columbus operations manager Matt Bennett said the time to prepare is now.

“Do not wait, make sure you have your emergency kit prepared, charge up your cell phones, follow us on social media and make sure you have a plan in place if you do have an extended power outage,” Bennett said.

If you see a downed power line, call 911 and AEP Ohio.

As the cold weather moves in, Columbia Gas is reminding people to use their heat safely.

Amanda DePerro, communications specialist at Columbia Gas, provided the following tips for those wanting to heat their home.

1. Make sure you are not using the stove or oven to heat your home.

2. Clear the gas meter. Make sure there is no snow or ice on it in case the gas company needs to get to it in an emergency.

3. Clear your chimney and make sure it has no blockages.

4. If you use a space heater, it is recommended to keep it on a hard, non-flammable surface and be sure not to use a generator inside or in an enclosed space.

5. Another thing to watch out for is the smell of rotten eggs, which could indicate a gas leak.

“This is definitely the time of the year where people should be a bit more cautious with using those natural gas appliances. Don't do anything risky. It is better to be safe,” DePerro said.

Warming stations are set up across Columbus. Find a list here: https://www.csb.org/about-us/contact-us.
