COLUMBUS, Ohio — Less than one week after a fire broke out at an abandoned east Columbus indoor water park, 10TV is learning more about the potential buyer who had been in talks to purchase the property.
Sunday night's fire at the old Fort Rapids Indoor WaterPark Resort came just months after a probate court cleared the way for this "problem property" to be sold.
The water park has been closed since 2016 and has been at the center of health, safety and fire violations.
10TV has confirmed that a company connected to California developer Maxwell Drever has been in contract to buy the property since July.
Drever said his son Galen is spearheading the project.
Before the fire, they had plans to repurpose the property's hotel rooms into more than 300 "workforce apartments" whose target tenants would be single mothers.
But after the fire, the company is now weighing its options to determine if they will still go through with the sale.
"Will it still be economically viable? I assume the probate court will be open to mark down the price," Drever said.
Drever added that the initial asking price was about $6 million.
He said the company hopes to have a full assessment of the damage and a better idea of what they will do by next week.
