Scioto County woman charged with involuntary manslaughter after 3-month-old child found unresponsive

Kristen Vassar has been charged with three counts of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of child endangerment and two counts of possession of drugs.

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio — A Scioto County woman was arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter Tuesday after her 3-month-old infant was found unresponsive at their home.

The Scioto County Sheriff's Office said that officers responded to a home in Portsmouth after receiving a call about an unresponsive infant. When officers arrived, they found the infant "lifeless" and was later pronounced dead.

Detectives conducted a search of the apartment, locating evidence and interviewed several witnesses including the mother of the infant, 25-year-old Kristen Vassar.

Vassar was arrested without incident, the sheriff's office said.

She has been charged with three counts of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of child endangerment and two counts of possession of drugs.

Vassar is being held in the Scioto County Jail on a $180,000 bond and appeared in Portsmouth Municipal Court on Wednesday.

The investigation is ongoing and could result in more charges.
