COLUMBUS, Ohio — A Columbus City Schools student died from his injuries from being hit by a car in east Columbus Tuesday afternoon.
The crash happened on James Road at Fair Avenue around 4:10 p.m.
The driver of a Pontiac Bonneville was traveling south on James Road while attempting to give her daughter in the back seat a pacifier, according to a crash report from Columbus police.
The driver told officers that she looked up and saw that traffic was at a halt. She locked her brakes up but they were faulty and she swerved to the right to avoid hitting the vehicles in front of her.
The report states that the driver went up over the curb and struck 15-year-old Devon Biggs.
Devon was taken to Grant Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. He was later pronounced dead by medical staff.
Police said the driver stayed at the scene. The crash remains under investigation.
Columbus City Schools confirmed that Devon was a freshman who attended Eastmoor Academy. The district said he and another student were waiting for the light to change on James Road and Fair Avenue before the crash happened.
"He was a popular student-athlete who showed great promise in his studies and loved his EA school community. He will be greatly missed," a spokesperson with CCS said in a statement.
The district's CARE and Wellness team are providing support and guidance for students at the school.
