COLUMBUS, Ohio - At the Fifth Annual Guns and Hoses, which is put on by the Arnold Sports Festival, firefighters and police officers from around Ohio step into the boxing ring to throw blows for charity.
Outside of the ring, a different jab is being thrown.
"We don't have that boxing...that fun stuff in the training academy," Sarah Wagner said, laughing. "We train for a job."
"Yeah, this is my job," Kylie Lavey retorts quickly. "That's a part of my job."
Wagner has been with the Columbus Division of Fire for almost four years. Lavey has been with the Columbus Police Department for six years.
They met each other last year for the first time in the same ring.
"We fought last year," Wagner said.
One meeting was not enough. Wagner won that fight by decision.
Wagner likes the competition. Lavey likes the training. Together, they dance.
"I just enjoy the athleticism of it, just the dance of it," Lavey says. "And, putting my efforts to something athletic like I've always done growing up."
Firefighters versus police. Police versus firefighters. It is a thing. Even they do not know why.
"I'm not really sure where it ever started but it's a funny joke," Lavey said. "It's funny to say you took the wrong tests and you all are basement savers," she laughed.
"You guys own the donut shop, so that's ok," Wagner said in reply.
Thursday's fight once again went to Wagner in a judge's decision.
After the fight the two shared a friendly hug and a congratulatory wishr.
But, you can bet they will be back in the ring next year.
