Police: Man with 'multiple edged weapons' fatally shot by Columbus police in University District

Police were called to a home on Chittenden Avenue three times for reports of a man with an edged weapon. Police say mental health response units were called.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A 34-year-old man was shot and killed by Columbus police after they reportedly approached officers with “multiple edged weapons” in the University District on Tuesday.

Columbus Police Assistant Chief LaShanna Potts said officers were called to a home in the 200 block of Chittenden Avenue between North 4th and Summit streets three times in more than a five-hour span.

Police were first called to the home around 7 p.m. Monday after receiving a report of a person with an “edged weapon” who was bleeding. Officers found the person holding the weapon and called for the Mobile Crisis Response (MCR) Unit.

The unit is made up of Columbus police officers and Columbus Public Health clinicians who are trained in handling mental health concerns and crises.

Potts said the man refused to engage with the officers and police cleared the scene.

Around 10:25 p.m., Columbus police were called again to the home after receiving a report of the same person with a weapon threatening to hurt other people inside.

Arriving officers found the man alone in the home. Police called for MCR again who spoke with the person on the phone. The person refused further help and police cleared the scene again.

Around 1:30 a.m., dispatchers received another call regarding the same person holding several “edged weapons.” Officers encountered the person in an alley who approached them.

Potts said the officers gave several commands for the person to drop their weapons, but they did not comply. Several officers fired their weapons and a Taser at the man.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured.

The Franklin County Coroner's Office identified the man as Lamine Mahmoudi.

Columbus police have not released the identities of the officers who fired their weapons.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is investigating the incident.

A nearby resident talked to 10TV following the shooting and called the incident "terrifying."

"Like I literally let my sons walk to school by themselves and well, walk to the school bus stop by themselves in the morning. And now I'm like, I don't know if I even want to do that," Mariah Honeycutt shared. "It's terrifying because he literally walks right up here at the bus stop. So, it's right by the police station. So it's scary."
