Police identify man killed in northeast Columbus crash

Police said the crash happened just after 11:15 p.m. near the intersection of Cherry Bottom Road and Hewn Timber Lane which is south of State Route 161.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Columbus police have identified a man who died after a crash that happened in northeast Columbus on Friday night.

The man killed in the crash was 24-year-old Brandon Smith of Columbus.

Police said the crash happened just after 11:15 p.m. near the intersection of Cherry Bottom Road and Hewn Timber Lane, which is south of State Route 161.

According to police, Smith was driving a 2014 Honda Accord north on Cherry Bottom Road, when he lost control of the car. The car then went across the southbound lane and went off the road, hit two trees, overturned and then came to a rest in the southbound lane of Cherry Bottom Road.

Smith was pronounced dead at the scene just before 11:30 p.m.

A passenger in the vehicle was taken to Mt. Carmel East Hospital in critical condition, police said.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
