BUCKEYE LAKE, Ohio - Warning signs to the public were spotted Tuesday around Buckeye Lake region warning about toxins that may be in the water.
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources says there are high levels of blue-green algae blooms at both Fairfield Beach and Crystal Beach at Buckeye Lake State Park.
It's especially dangerous if kids, the elderly and pregnant woman swallow the water. They can get sick or nauseous.
Algal blooms have become more noticeable in Ohio’s Lakes, and streams over the last few years, according to Ohio EPA.
Despite the warning signs, there were still plenty of people swimming in the lake on Tuesday. At least one mom left with her kids as soon as she found out about the warning.
ODNR tests the water weekly and will take the sign down as soon as the bloom levels lower.
