Parents charged with involuntary manslaughter in July shooting death of 5-year-old Columbus girl

Police arrested Antwan Robinson and Breana Mathews on Tuesday in connection to the fatal shooting of Serenity Robinson.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The parents of a 5-year-old girl who police said accidentally shot herself back in July are now facing charges in her death. 

Columbus police SWAT team members arrested 44-year-old Antwan Robinson and 24-year-old Breana Mathews on Tuesday in connection to the fatal shooting of Serenity Robinson. 

The incident happened at an apartment complex in the 2100 block of Via Da Vinci Street shortly after 9:45 a.m. on July 31. Columbus police responded to a call from Antwan claiming his daughter shot herself. 

Responding officers arrived to find Antwan performing what they described as life-saving measures on Serenity. She was transported to Nationwide Children’s Hospital where she later died.   

At the time, police told 10TV the shooting was believed to be an accident. In an update Wednesday, police said Robinson is charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter, one count of felony child endangerment and one count of weapons under disability. Mathews is charged with involuntary manslaughter and felony child endangerment.
