OSHP: 94-year-old man killed in Marion County crash

Richard Roads reportedly attempted to turn left onto Newmans Cardington Road from the right lane and was struck by the semi.

MARION, Ohio — A 94-year-old man is dead and another person is injured following a crash in Marion County Saturday afternoon, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

The crash happened around 12:20 p.m. Saturday on U.S. Route 23 near Newmans-Cardington Road in Marion.

OSHP says that a Kenworth T680 semitrailer and a Lincoln Town Car, driven by Richard Roads, were both traveling southbound on Route 23 at the same time. The semi was in the left lane and Roads was driving in the right lane. 

Roads reportedly attempted to turn left onto Newmans-Cardington Road from the right lane and was struck by the semi.

According to troopers, he left the left side of the road after the impact and struck a traffic sign and a ditch before coming to a rest. 

The driver of the semi also traveled off the left side of the road and struck a ditch, overturning before entering the northbound lanes of Route 23 and coming to a rest. 

Roads was taken to Marion General Hospital and later transferred to Riverside Methodist Hospital where he died.

The semi driver was transported to Marion General Hospital with minor injuries.

Both drivers were wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash.

The incident remains under investigation.

Troopers were assisted on scene by the Marion County Sheriff's Office, Marion Township Fire and EMS, Fort Morrow Fire and EMS, Pleasant Township Fire and EMS, ODOT, Liverpool Towing and Precision Towing.
