COLUMBUS, Ohio — Three members of Olentangy Liberty High School’s varsity boys’ hockey coaching staff, including head coach Kevin Alexander, have resigned amid an investigation into conduct, according to the district.
Olentangy Schools confirmed the resignation of Alexander and two assistant coaches in an email sent to 10TV on Monday. An investigation was launched by the district and all three chose to resign.
Alexander “voluntarily resigned” on Feb. 28, according to the district.
"The District was disappointed to receive reports that the former coaches used inappropriate language with student athletes and behaved in a manner inconsistent with their duty to serve as role models. The former coaches chose to resign during our investigation, and we accepted their resignations," the statement read.
The district did not provide further details on the reports or what was allegedly said to the students.
The district wrapped up its statement by saying, “Olentangy Schools remains forward-focused in pursuit of our mission to facilitate maximum learning for every student. This includes student athletes participating in extracurricular activities.”
Alexander sent a letter to players earlier this month after he was placed on leave on where he provided a timeline of how he was notified by the district of reports.
The head coach said on Feb. 18, he was notified that a parent made a report. Two days later, Alexander said he was informed that the complaint had to be reported to HR for an investigation and that he and the other two coaches would be suspended indefinitely.
“No great coach is perfect, but every great coach and great player knows Hockey is a tough game that requires grit and mental toughness. Great coaches always have nothing but the best interest of their players in mind. As everyone knows we have nothing but love and respect for our past and present players,” his letter read in part.
Olentangy Liberty was knocked out of the OHSAA regional tournament by St. Charles, who won 4-2 during a game on March 2. Olentangy won the 2022-2023 OHSAA State Championship last year under Alexander’s leadership.
The team is now playing under interim coach Jonathon Falvo.
10TV has reached out to Alexander for comment but has not yet received a response.
