COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio is set to start allowing dispensaries to sell recreational marijuana on Tuesday, and many Ohioans said they’re ready for the change and the freedom that comes with it.
"I feel like the people have been wanting this for a long time,” Jesse Gilbin said.
"I think it's really cool that we came this far,” Miles Ferrante said.
On Tuesday, 98 dispensaries across the state will be the first licensed to sell recreational marijuana.
"I think the best thing about it is… one less thing to worry about, getting arrested, jail time, anything like that,” Gilbin said.
Customers must be 21 or older with a valid government-issued ID and are limited to buying one ounce per visit.
A drawback for some people is the 10% tax. Municipalities also have the option to add additional taxes.
"The taxing on it I feel like is very inconvenient for certain people but I mean overall this is benefiting certain people who have been wanting this to happen for a while,” DeCarlo Walker said.
Customers are also only able to purchase recreational marijuana with debit cards, cash or some third-party apps.
But, some people are more informed about the rules than others.
"I try to keep myself educated on those things so I am slightly aware,” Shirley Bartee said.
Some people are still unclear that although where you can buy marijuana has changed, where you can smoke it has not. It is still illegal to smoke marijuana in public.
It's also still illegal to drive while under the influence of marijuana. Employers are still able to fire employees who use, possess or distribute the drug.
Despite these restrictions, many said they’re still excited for what’s to come.
"I think everyone’s going to be a little bit more calmer around town starting tomorrow,” Gilbin said.
"Enjoy it Ohio, fire it up,” Bartee said.
