MENTOR, Ohio - A northeastern Ohio police officer has died after being struck by a vehicle. According to Mentor Police, the suspect was taken into custody and has not been charged yet.

Officer Mathew Mazany, a 14-year veteran of the Mentor Police Department, was assisting with a traffic stop and was struck by a vehicle around 1 a.m. Sunday.

Authorities say the incident happened on State Route 2 just east of State Route 306. First responders transported Mazany to a local hospital where he later died.

The driver who struck Mazany did not stop and law enforcement across the state began searching for a late-model, dark-colored Jeep Wrangler with damage to its right front and possibly right side.

Mentor police says the investigation led them to Mentor Lagoons Marina Sunday where detectives located the Jeep.

At a press conference Monday, police named Brian Anthony as the driver and suspect in the fatal hit-and-run crash.

Anthony was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, he was tested for drugs and alcohol following his arrest.

He is expected to be arraigned in court Monday.
