OSHP releases report detailing fatal I-70 bus crash

The highway patrol has released its report detailing the sequence of events in the crash. NTSB is expected to release its preliminary report in the next week or two.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio State Highway Patrol released its report for the deadly crash on Interstate 70 earlier this month that left six people dead, and more than a dozen others injured.

Five vehicles were involved in the fiery crash on Nov. 14, including a Pioneer Trails charter bus that was transporting students and chaperones from the Tuscarawas Valley Local School District. There were a total of 57 people onboard.

There were also two commercial vehicles and two passenger vehicles involved.

The accident happened on I-70 West in Licking County, about 26 miles east of Columbus. 

Here's what OSHP says happened during the crash

The crash report shows that all five of the vehicles were heading west on I-70 in the right lane. 

The vehicles were in the following order from back to front: Freightliner semi-trailer, Nissan Murano, charter bus, Toyota Highlander and Volvo semi.

The sequence of events is as follows:

  • Passenger vehicles, bus and Volvo slowed for traffic; Freightliner semi strikes the Nissan Murano in the back
  • Nissan hits the back of the bus; overridden by the Freightliner 
  • Freightliner hits the back of the bus
  • Bus hits back of the Toyota Highlander; Toyota hits Volvo
  • Toyota travels into left lane, causes bus to hit Volvo

The speed limit in the area is posted as 70 mph. OSHP only provided a speed for the Volvo semi, which was going an estimated 10 mph, according to the truck's dash camera footage.

According to the report, the driver of the Freightliner was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol during the crash.

OSHP released the identities of those killed in the crash as 18-year-old John Mosley, 18-year-old Jeffery Worrell, 15-year-old Katelyn Owens, 56-year-old Dave Kennat, 39-year-old Kristy Gaynor and 45-year-old Shannon Wigfield.

Wigfield, Gaynor and Kennat were inside the Nissan, while the three teens who died were traveling in the bus.

Body camera footage from one of the responding troopers was released following the crash. Out of respect for the friends and families of those who died, 10TV is not sharing the footage. 

The National Transportation Safety Board is expected to release its preliminary report of the crash within the next week or two.
