PICKERINGTON, Ohio — Ohioans looking to donate to support storm relief efforts and victims of Hurricane Helene are warned to look out for scams and research the organization before making a contribution.

Ohio Department of Commerce Director Sherry Maxfield warned Ohioans to be aware of the potential for fraudsters who attempt to exploit the goodwill of individuals who desire to help communities.

There are several state or regional chapters of reputable national organizations Ohioans can turn to, like the American Red Cross, United Way and Salvation Army. Any organization without a proven track record should be researched.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency provided a list of recognized disaster relief organizations through the National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster. Members are fully vetted, experienced and dedicated professionals, according to NVOAD's website. You can view a list of organizations here.

“Unfortunately, scams and fraudulent activity often present a very real threat following natural disasters; the current situation involving Hurricane Helene is likely no exception,” Maxfield said. “Ohioans are generous individuals who want to make a difference, especially in times of crisis. That is why it is imperative that they take the necessary steps to protect themselves from scammers while also helping to ensure their money goes where they intend for it to go.”

More than 73,000 people are still without power.

Here are some tips for avoiding possible scams:

  • Donate to trusted charities: Only donate to charities with a proven track record in handling disaster relief. Ohioans are warned to be cautious of unsolicited requests for donations.
  • Conduct research: Always verify an organization’s charitable reputation by conducting an online search, and consider using resources like the BBB's Wise Giving Alliance or Charity Watch.
  • Crowdfunding caution: Exercise caution when donating to individuals on crowdfunding sites. If you do, make sure it’s someone you personally know and trust.
  • Secure payment methods: Avoid making donations via cash, gift cards, via wiring money services such as Venmo, or cryptocurrency. By making donations via credit cards, Ohioans can stay better protected from financial concerns.
  • Verify text donations: Before making a donation via text, be sure to confirm the charity’s number on its website to ensure it is a valid number.
