Early voting begins in Ohio: What to know, where to cast your ballot

Here's what you need to know if you plan on voting earlier than Nov. 5.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Early voting is now underway in Ohio for the 2024 general election.

The state began accepting early ballots Tuesday for this fall’s election for president, a key U.S. Senate race and a redistricting measure. A spokesperson for the Franklin County Board of Elections said about 4,200 people showed up to vote on the first day of early voting.

Where to vote

Starting Oct. 8, Ohioans can vote at their local Board of Elections buildings.

Tuesday, Oct. 8 - Friday, Oct. 11 from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Monday, Oct. 14 - Friday, Oct. 18 from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Monday, Oct. 21 - Friday, Oct. 25 from 8 a.m. - 6 p.m.

Saturday, Oct. 26 from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Sunday, Oct. 27 from 1-5 p.m.

Monday, Oct. 28 - Friday, Nov. 1 from 7:30 a.m. - 7:30 p.m.

Saturday, Nov. 2 from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Sunday, Nov. 3 from 1-5 p.m.

Polls open at 6:30 p.m. and close at 7:30 p.m.

How to check your voter registration status

Through the Secretary of State’s website, Ohioans can enter their first and last names and county of residency to check their registration status. If you’re registered, a polling location and other local information will be provided. If you’re not registered, you can submit your registration here.

When is the deadline to register to vote?

Voter registration was due, in all forms, to Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose by Oct. 7. Any mailed-in registrations must be postmarked by Oct. 7.

Absentee voting deadlines

Those planning on voting absentee must request a ballot. Voters have until seven days before the election to request a ballot. These are the first votes counted on election night. If mailed, these ballots must be postmarked by the day before the election in order to be counted. Those returning it in person to a county board of election must do so before the close of the polls on Election Day.

Military and overseas absentee voting will be available beginning Sept. 20. Absentee voting by mail will start on Oct. 8.
