CLARK COUNTY, Ohio — A 16-year-old boy was charged with reckless homicide in the shooting death of another juvenile as a result of horseplay involving a firearm in Clark County on Saturday, authorities said.
The Clark County Sheriff's Office said deputies responded to a report of a shooting in the 4400 block of Reno Road in Northridge shortly before 6:40 p.m.
Arriving deputies found a male juvenile with a single gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead at 7:36 p.m.
The sheriff's office said a 16-year-old boy and another juvenile relative went to the Reno Road residence to meet with the victim and another resident.
The 16-year-old had the gun out and "was manipulating the action," according to the sheriff's office. Investigators said that there was no animosity or conflict between the people involved.
It is believed that the magazine was removed from the gun and the 16-year-old pointed it at the victim and pulled the trigger, believing the weapon to be empty.
The sheriff's office said the single remaining round discharged, hitting the victim in the torso. Those who were in the home attempted to render aid to the juvenile victim before medics arrived.
Investigators said the shooting was because of an "ill-mannered moment of horseplay."
The 16-year-old was charged with reckless homicide and booked into the juvenile detention center.
The case remains under investigation.
