Car struck by train in Ohio after attempting to cross railroad tracks as gates were lowering

The driver of the car and those on board the train were not injured in the incident.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A car was hit by a train after getting stuck between railroad crossing gates in northern Ohio on Saturday night.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the driver of a Toyota Scion was attempting to cross railroad tracks while the crossing gate bars were coming down on Perkins Avenue, near US Route 6 in Erie County, just before 10 p.m. The gates lowered before the car made it to the other side and the car then became stuck.

OSHP says the driver was able to get out after the car got stuck.

A Norfolk Southern train headed toward the crossing was unable to stop in time and struck the Toyota.

OSHP says the car caught fire and the train was then disabled.

The driver of the car and those on board the train were not injured in the incident.

The road was closed for approximately four hours while the scene was cleared.
