COLUMBUS, Ohio — WBNS-10TV was honored with a national Edward R. Murrow award for its coverage of the deadly bus crash that happened last November on Interstate 70 in Licking County.

The awards are given out annually by the Radio Television Digital News Association. 10TV was first given the Region 7 Large Market Television award and was later named a national winner for breaking news coverage.

RTDNA honors outstanding achievements in broadcast and digital journalism with the Edward R. Murrow Awards each year. The Murrow Awards are among the most prestigious in news and recognize local and national news stories that "uphold the RTDNA Code of Ethics, demonstrate technical expertise and exemplify the importance and impact of journalism as a service to the community."

The deadly bus crash happened on Nov. 14, 2023. Five vehicles were involved, including a Pioneer Trails charter bus that was transporting students and chaperones from the Tuscarawas Valley Local School District. There were a total of 57 people aboard the bus. Two commercial vehicles and two passenger vehicles were also involved.

Six people died, including three students, and 18 others were injured.

10TV was there on the scene after it happened, communicating with families, authorities and witnesses to inform the public – professionally and respectfully – of what happened.

"I'm incredibly proud of the WBNS-10TV team for winning the 2024 national Edward R. Murrow award for breaking news coverage. The power of local journalism allowed our team to provide the community with answers, fight disinformation and honor the victims.
