COLUMBUS, Ohio — Just over a year has passed since sports betting became legal in Ohio, and the state's Casino Control Commission reports residents wagered billions of dollars throughout the year.
In 2023, more than $7.6 billion was wagered on sports in Ohio, according to a report released Wednesday. Of the wagers made, those made online or on smartphones accounted for 97% of all bets placed.
January was the state's biggest month, with $1.1 billion wagered during the first month of legal betting. Since then, bets have not surpassed $900 million in a single month.
Some of the most highly used sports betting apps among Ohio users include FanDuel, DraftKings and BetMGM.
Ohio currently has 20 online/mobile sports betting operators, along with 16 in-person retail operators.
Online sports betting generated more than $913 million in taxable revenue last year while bets wagered at retail locations generated more than $23 million.
Ohio’s four casinos set a new revenue record in 2023 with just over $1 billion in casino gaming revenues, which includes revenue earned from both slots and tables.
