Ohio State students discuss stances on safety in Short North

In the same section of the neighborhood where the mass shooting took place in June, Columbus police were investigating two violent incidents in the last 24 hours.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Short North is a popular hang-out spot for people in Columbus and especially for students from The Ohio State University, with the campus located in the next neighborhood over.

Safety in the neighborhood has been a major topic of conversation since a mass shooting this summer where ten people were injured.

In the same section of the neighborhood where the mass shooting took place in June, Columbus police were investigating two violent incidents in the last 24 hours.

On Wednesday around 5:30 p.m., police reported a man was shot outside The Joint on High. Several people called 911 to report the shooting.

“Someone just got shot, dude is still out on High Street with a gun,” one caller reported.

Police said the victim is expected to survive. No suspect was identified.

Hours later around 1:30 a.m., police responded to a report of an assault in the 1100 block of North High Street. Police said a woman was found with large lacerations to the head and neck and was injured so badly, she could not speak to police. No suspect was identified.

Columbus police called it an “isolated incident" and were investigating outside Standard Hall on Thursday morning.

The section of the Short North is a popular spot for Ohio State students to hang out.

“I know sometimes I feel unsafe, especially if I am ever caught by myself trying to meet up with friends and things. But in groups of people I definitely feel safe,” said Ohio State senior Reagan Cash.

Ohio State junior Elise Brown said she avoids the area.

“I think the police do a good job in reacting to it, but I think there needs to be proactive measures after these incidents,” Brown said.

Sophomore Ja’Neja Nelson-Riley said she tries to avoid the area past 9:30 p.m.

“I wouldn’t say I don’t feel safe. I would say I am very cautious about my surroundings now,” she said.

Following the mass shooting this summer, the City of Columbus announced it would enforce a curfew for teenagers. Columbus police put up security cameras and increased patrols.
