Ohio State police investigating shooting south of campus; 1 struck by bullet fragment

A Buckeye Alert was issued around 6:25 p.m. after a report of a shooting at North High Street and East 11th Avenue.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Authorities believe an altercation between two groups of people led to shots being fired and a graduate student being injured near the campus of Ohio State University on Wednesday.

A Buckeye Alert was issued around 6:25 p.m. after a report of a shooting at North High Street and East 11th Avenue.

Police said one person was struck by a bullet fragment. Monica Moll, the associate vice president for public safety and interim police chief for Ohio State, said some debris from the shooting struck the victim, a graduate student, in the face and left a scratch. They were treated at a nearby hospital.

A bullet also struck a vehicle with two people inside, but the occupants were not injured.

Students and staff were asked to shelter in place while officers searched areas on and off campus for the suspects. Police said the suspects are believed to have left the area. The shelter-in-place was lifted but police are asking people to remain vigilant.

Detectives are searching the area for surveillance video to identify anyone involved in the shooting.

Anyone with information regarding the shooting is asked to Columbus Police Felony Assault Detective Shotwell at 614-645-4141 or Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 614-461-TIPS (8477).
