When it comes to driving roundabouts, the rules can change depending on the configuration.
"Yea, it's confusing," said Richard Weber, a driver in Gahanna.
Roundabouts have been instituted in several jurisdictions across central Ohio but, few of them are the same.
"Roundabouts are a very efficient way of traversing an intersection," said Sgt. Ernest Choung, of the Gahanna Police Department Patrol Division. "It really depends on the roundabout itself."
For instance, a roundabout in Gahanna has two lanes but only one of them wraps all the way around the roundabout. So, it's easier for drivers to know which lanes go to which exit.
"The signage is actually very important. It determines which lane you need to be in and which exit and which route you are going to go," said Sgt. Choung.
Roundabouts get a little more confusing with multiple lanes wrap the entire roundabout.
Hilliard has a double roundabout with double lanes.
Law enforcement has seen an increase in accidents and drivers using the wrong lanes to turn.
For example, in Hilliard and Dublin you can get a ticket for incorrect lane usage. The tickets are $115 and $116 respectively.
But in Gahanna, you likely won't get a ticket for changing lanes, mainly because the lanes are configured differently.
"If there are dotted lines and there are no other indications then you can change lanes but you do have to do it safely," said Sgt. Choung.
Moral of the story: pay attention and follow the signs no matter the city you're in.
