Flags lowered to honor Ohio corrections officer who was fatally shot during training exercise

Lt. Rodney Osborne was fatally shot on Tuesday during a training exercise at the Corrections Training Academy in Pickaway County.

OHIO, USA — Governor Mike DeWine on Wednesday ordered that U.S. and state flags at all Ohio rehabilitation centers and prisons be flown at half-staff in honor of Lt. Rodney Osborne.

Osborne was fatally shot on Tuesday during a training exercise at the Corrections Training Academy in Pickaway County. The shooting happened at the tactical firing range.

Officials did not say how the fatal shooting happened, but Chambers-Smith said the incident appeared to be a “tragic accident.”

Osborne has been with the Ohio Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation for 13 years and worked at the Southern Ohio Corrections Facility in Scioto County, according to ODRC Director Annette Chambers-Smith. He was named employee of the year by the prison last week.

DeWine ordered that the flags be flown at half-staff now until sunset on the day of his funeral to honor his life.

“In honor of the life and service of Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction Lieutenant Rodney Osborne, Governor Mike DeWine has ordered the flags of the United States and the state of Ohio to be flown at half-staff upon all Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction facilities now until sunset on the day of his funeral.”
