Federally, bridges must be inspected every two years. ODOT says they inspect all of their bridges annually.

In downtown Dublin, a new pedestrian and bicycle bridge is in the process of being built.

It will be a 760-foot "s-curve" suspension bridge that'll connect the new development on the east side of the Scioto River to historic Dublin.

Their public works director, Megan O'Callaghan, explained how they plan to keep pedestrians safe once it's complete.

"We're confident in our construction methodologies, our policy and procedures. We're confident that routine inspections would catch any issues that might arise and we'll definitely have routine maintenance procedures we will follow as well," O'Callaghan said.

Among other safety measures, the bridge will have handrails and lighting when it opens to the public in mid-2019.
