Officials: Fire at abandoned Newark home caused by manufacturing of drugs

An emergency dispatcher said firefighters were called to the 200 block of Essex Street just before 8 a.m. Wednesday.

NEWARK, Ohio — Officials say a fire that broke out at a Newark home on Wednesday morning was caused by the manufacturing of drugs.

An emergency dispatcher said firefighters were called to the 200 block of Essex Street just before 8 a.m. Wednesday.

According to a press release from the Newark Fire Department, crews found heavy smoke and fire throughout the abandoned, two-story home.

The fire has since been contained.

A man was taken to The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center for extensive burns to much of his body. The man's condition was not available.

The Newark Fire Department, the Ohio State Fire Marshal's Fire and Explosion Investigation Bureau and the Newark Division of Police are investigating.

Newark Fire Chief Patrick Connor said he is concerned about the number of fires that have happened in Newark this year. The State Fire Marshal's office offered to provide assistance to the fire department.
