Norwich Township Fire asking residents to pass levy that would generate $9 million a year

The letter states the money would be used to increase staffing levels, add a fourth ambulance, a second ladder truck and help construct a fourth fire station.

HILLIARD, Ohio — The Norwich Township Fire Department is asking residents to pass a levy that would cost homeowners at least a few hundred dollars in property taxes each year.

The 4.9-mill permanent levy would cost homeowners $172 per year for each $100,000 in property valuation, according to a letter sent out by Norwich Township Fire Chief David Baird. If passed, the levy would generate just over $9.1 million per year.

The letter states the money would be used to increase staffing levels, add a fourth ambulance, a second ladder truck and help construct a fourth fire station.

Baird said in the letter that the cost of trucks and equipment has increased and with the growth in the area, the department needs to add personnel.

A fire engine in 2013 cost taxpayers just under $470,000. A new engine today costs around $1.2 million. An ambulance 10 years ago costs about $211,000. That cost today is about $324,000.
In his letter, the chief said the fire department responded to 4,740 calls 10 years ago. In 2023 there were 6,998 calls for service.

"I think it is a good idea. From a safety factor because the area really is growing that it helps to keep the residents safe," said resident Ami Papadopulo.

The last levy in the township was passed in 2013.

“I hear lots of firetrucks each day and it seems like there has been an increase in need for that. I would totally support providing more funds for everyone to remain safe and to get every ounce of help they need for that,” said Emily Terry-Adams, who lives in the area. "Of course, everything in life has gone up. We also have to pay to get the things we need to keep our children and our communities safe."

Voters will decide on the levy on March 19.
