COLUMBUS, Ohio — A homeowner shot a man who was reportedly breaking into their garage in the North Linden neighborhood on Thursday.
Columbus Police Sgt. James Fuqua told 10TV’s Lacey Crisp that after 8:30 a.m., officers were informed that someone was shot in the 1600 block of Audrey Road between Cleveland Avenue and Oaklawn Street.
The homeowner told police that he was at work when they received a notification from his security system that someone was breaking into his property.
According to Fuqua, the homeowner arrived at his home and confronted the suspect, described as a man, who was breaking into the garage at the time and got into an altercation. At some point, the homeowner fired his weapon at the suspect, striking the suspect at least once.
The homeowner called 911 after they had shot the suspect, according to Fuqua.
The sergeant added that someone was at the house when the alleged burglary occurred. It is unclear if they witnessed anything, but no other injuries were reported.
The suspect was taken to Grant Medical Center in critical condition. Fuqua said the suspect is going to survive his injuries.
While evidence is still being gathered, Fuqua said it appeared that the homeowner and the suspect did not know each other. He added that items from the garage were found around the immediate area.
“That is going to be critical. This is a situation where we're not talking about a suspect gaining entry into a structure of the actual inside of your house. We are still talking about property,” Fuqua said.
Fuqua added that the suspect is being questioned and it is unclear what charges would be filed.
A neighbor told 10TV that there have been several break-ins in the neighborhood in the last few weeks.
